A serious accident which took place at approximately 6am this morning (Mon) has closed the N17 a few hundred metres south to the Collooney roundabout.
Ballymote Fire Brigade are also at the scene.
Traffic is being diverted through the village of Collooney with heavy good traffic forced to return to Ballymote for an alternative route.
The road is expected to remain closed for several hours as Garda technical experts examine the scene.
Motorists are reporting major delays.
It has been confirmed that one person, a man, died in the single vehicle incident. He has been named locally as Gary Kyle, a 28-year-old man from Ballymote. The body was removed by the Ambulance Service and taken to Sligo General Hospital where a postmortem will be carried out.
Gardai believe that Mr Kyle may have been returning home from a late party when he was struck by the Kerry Fresh refrigerated truck. The truck was travelling in the Galway direction. The driver is believed to be uninjured but shocked.
A bicycle was found in the grass margin close to where the accident occurred but it is unclear whether Mr Kyle had been using it.
Sligo Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the accident. They can be contacted at 071-9157000
