IFA President John Bryan has welcomed the stimulus package announced by the Government. However he said the package should have incorporated a stimulus for agriculture.
He said, “There is a contradiction when the Government is able to find €2bn for various projects, yet funding for farm schemes continues to be severely cut. Minister Simon Coveney’s delay and foot-dragging on a meaningful AEOS scheme is in stark contrast to his repeated endorsement of the targets in Food Harvest 2020. If there is no extra production at farm level, the increase in food exports will not happen.”
“The best way to get a return for the Government in terms of generating activity in the rural economy is through investment in farming, and especially by supporting vital farm schemes.”
