Senator Marc Mac Sharry has welcomed the official launch, which will take place later today (2pm) of the outdoor gym and recreational facilities by the Minister for Sport, Michael Ring TD at both Doorly Park and the Mitchel Curley Park.
The Sligo senator said,“In an era where fitness and outdoor pursuits are the new going out it is great to have the superb fitness infrastructure now provided at both the Mitchel Curley and Doorly Park. The facilities are second to none nationwide and a credit to all concerned “
“Funded by the Sligo Borough Council and Sports Capital Grant Aid under the previous and current administrations the state of the art equipment greatly enhances the natural fitness infrastructure of the greater Sligo borough Area.
"I would like to take this opportunity to commend the initiative taken at the Mitchel Curley Park Out Door Gym Group and in particular Kathryn Mc Sweeney and Francis Fidgeon for their drive and fundraising endeavours which helped ensure the success of the Project. Outgoing Mayor Rosaleen O Grady and all the members of Sligo Borough Council together with Micheal Condren are also to be commended for their commitment to both The Doorly and Mitchel Curley Park upgrades which are a credit to all.
“As a very regular user of Doorly Park, in particular, I would air one note of caution and appeal to the authorities for the erection of a safety barrier or fence along the road site at Doorly park where the open plan lay out may not be in the best interests of children of all ages availing of the equipment along the roads edge”
The statement concluded “this project has shown the success that the sports capital programme’s funding can achieve in communities. With allocations expected in the Autumn I hope that the Minister will ensure that of the 2150 applications and some €227 million to distribute, Sligo and the North West region are given at the very least a fair share of the spoils”
