€1.6m N4 re-alignment project starts Monday

Sligo County Council (SCC) have this afternoon confirmed that a major 1.1km re-alignment project on part of the 11km lethal stretch of the N4 between Castlebaldwin and Cloonamahon will get underway next Monday (27 Aug). The work will take place at Ardloy.

The SCC announcement states that between 1990 and 2009 there have been three fatal road accidents at Ardloy, 3KM north of Castlebaldwin. In this period there have also been eight recorded accidents, four serious injuries, three minor injuries.  These records do not include the many unreported and material damage accidents which also occurred at this location.  The local community has drawn attention to the high accident rate in this area by erecting crosses along this stretch to highlight the many lives lost.

Sligo County Council is pleased to announce that funding has been secured for  a programme of re-alignment works. The ‘N4 Ardloy Road Realignment scheme’ will start on the 27th August 2012. The cost of the project will be over €1.6 million, the main Contractors are Harrington Concrete and Quarries.

Project details

The N4 Ardloy Road Realignment scheme is approximately 1.1km long and is located approximately 3km north of Castlebaldwin village on the N4 National Primary Road. The construction of the road improvement scheme will take place both online and offline within existing green field areas. The proposed scheme consists of the following elements

    -Widening of the existing road carriageway to an S2 standard.

    -Improvement of 1 no priority junction

    -Excavation of existing road

    -Excavation of land adjacent to existing road

    -Drainage and ancillary roadworks

    -Culverting & attenuation works

    -Disposal/recovery of unacceptable roadworks materials

    -Diversion of assets of authorities, utilities and service providers

    -Road markings and signing works

    -Fencing and safety barrier systems

    -Road Pavement and earthworks

    -Access and accommodation works

    -Landscaping

    - Traffic Management

Safety

Providing a greater level of road safety is the key objective of this project. The existing sub standard geometry of this particular stretch of road is a major contributor to the number and severity of the accidents, and this provides an environment where vehicles are travelling too fast for the condition of the existing road.

Traffic management

Given the scale of the re-alignment programme, it will be necessary for temporary Traffic Management will be in place until the end of the year. This will result in delays in the vicinity of the works, and motorists are advised to plan their journeys to factor in the delays. The bulk of the work will be carried out on weekdays, but there will also be traffic management in place for some weekends. This will result in traffic delays in the vicinity of the works.  Sligo County Council along with the Contractor will endeavour to minimise disruption and inconvenience for motorists over the course of the contract.

When the project is completed, it will greatly improve road conditions and road safety for motorists.
