With the US Presidential elections approaching soon, Democrats Abroad Ireland – the official overseas wing of the Democratic Party - will host a special event in west Donegal later this month to focus on the county’s strong American links and to highlight the issues involved in the upcoming battle for the White House.
In a speech in Washington DC launching Irish American Heritage Month, President Barack Obama made special mention of Ireland and its importance in the development of the United States. “Over hundreds of years, Irish men, women, and children left the homes of their ancestors. Boarding overcrowded ships and navigating dangerous seas, these resilient travelers looked to the horizon with hope in their hearts.
"Many left any valuables, land, or stability they had behind, but they came instead with the true treasures of their homeland — song and literature, humor and tradition, faith and family. And when they landed on our shores, they shared their gifts generously, adding immeasurable value to towns, cities, and communities throughout our Nation.”
Sean Hillen, public relations director for Democrats Abroad Ireland, who is organising this month’s event, said, “The immense contribution by men and women from Ireland who emigrated to the US over the years has been well documented so this is an opportunity to honour them and all they achieved.
"Those very same people, most from poor backgrounds, would have strongly supported the policies President Obama has pursued over the last four years including the national healthcare bill that gives greater access to proper medical care. His task, however, is far from complete and with his multimillionaire Republican rival, Mitt Romney, boasting an extremely cash-rich campaign treasure chest, it will be a very tough election.”
