Home Helps to hold demonstration in Sligo Town

There was some confusion in earlier media reports suggesting different timings and location for tomorrow's Home Helps protest.

SIPTU have issued a statement which does not mention any march to Sligo General Hospital.

The statement reads; SIPTU Home Helps will hold a demonstration in Sligo Town on Thursday, 20th September, against attempts to cut their working hours and the failure of the Health Service Executive (HSE) to enter meaningful negotiations on the issuing of contracts of employment.

The protest will take place outside the HSE offices in Markievicz House, Sligo Town, from 1.00 p.m. to 2.00 p.m.

SIPTU Organiser, Declan Ferry, said: “Home Helps are convening this demonstration to highlight an attempt by the HSE to cut Home Help services in the Sligo and Letirim area by 10,000 hours per month. Home Helps completely oppose this attack on local services that will endanger clients’ lives and breaches the Croke Park Agreement.”

“Home Helps are also protesting at the failure of the HSE to abide by a Labour Court recommendation that specified management enter meaningful discussions with unions on an agreement to provide Home Helps with adequate contracts and security of earnings.”

Declan Ferry added: “We are asking trade unionists and the public to support this protest which will be attended by Home Helps, their clients and their clients’ families.”

During the protest, a petition in support of Home Help services will be delivered to the HSE offices in Markievicz House.
