Violent robbery at Sligo home - Victim has died UPDATED

GARDAI SEALED off a section of Old Market Street on Saturday morning -- close to Sligo Garda Station.

This follows reports of an overnight break-in at the home of one of the town's best known older residents.

Eugene Gillespie (67) and family ran a shop at Old Market Street.

It is believed that Mr Gillespie, who lived alone, was seriously assaulted in the course of the burglary and was tied up in his premises over his two-day ordeal.

He is being treated in Sligo General Hospital were his condition is described as 'serious'.

Gardai are also investigating whether money was the motive for the break-in.

It is understood that the assailants may have gained entry at the rear of the premises through a now delelict site opposite the Friary.

Gardaí are appealing for any information especially of any suspicious activity in the vicinity from Wednesday 19th Sept to this morning 22nd Sept.

UPDATE:: Mr Gillespie, the victim in what gardaí are referring to an an 'aggrivated robbery' has died this evening in Sligo General Hospital.
