Sligo's animal lovers to hold film and poetry night

November 1st is World Vegan Day, and in a slightly belated celebration of the occasion there's quite a night planned for the 3rd in the Open Trades Club, downstairs at the Adelaide Bar, Sligo. There will be a film screening, a poetry collection launch, a talk, vegan food, and Sligo's hottest DJ. Read on for more!

"Behind The Mask" (USA, 2008, 72 minutes) is a documentary by animal rights lawyer Shannon Keith, which looks at the people who call themselves the Animal Liberation Front. This is not an organisation, but a shared identity of a wide range of people who go to great lengths, and place themselves in danger, to rescue abused and victimised animals.

They expose the suffering inflicted on animals in laboratories, intensive farms, circuses and so forth, and often cause economic damage to businesses that profit from animal exploitation. Their actions are risky, illegal, and highly effective. Numerous activists have suffered prison sentences, threats and assaults, and a few have even been killed. And yet they continue, driven by compassion and anger. The film features some of the ALF themselves from the USA and UK, and a wide selection of commentary from several medical professionals, academics and journalists. Not to be missed!

Tina Cubberley is a passionate and dedicated advocate for animals, and a very talented poet to boot! She will be launching her first poetry collection, "Anti-Speciesist Action", and giving a few readings. Admission gets you a copy!

Roger Yates is a sociology lecturer at UCD and a veteran animal rights campaigner. He is well known in the movement and just as well-travelled, having given talks all over Europe. He will be discussing the case for animal rights.

According to one of the organisers told SligoToday.ie, "Since we're celebrating World Vegan Day, we will of course be providing a selection of vegan snacks. Think animal-free food means bland and boring? Come and let us enlighten you!

"Cherry on the cake, it's DJ Dilly Dream! Sligo's newest and hottest is coming to blow you all away with her unpredictable avalanche of floor-fillers. When she's really huge, you can say you were there at the start!

"It all begins at 8PM, and a mere 8 euro on the door gets you everything. If that's not great value for a night out, we'd like to see what is!"
