Mid-Life Slices, an anthology of writing and art from women in mid life from Sligo, Leitrim and West Cavan, was launched in April of this year by Marion Harkin, Independent MEP. Mary Manandhar, the third member of the team, was unable to attend the presentation as she herself has embraced positive change in mid life and is now working with the UN in Bangladesh.
Maureen Durcan acknowledged that the cheque would be a great help in the on-going support of individuals and their families dealing with a diagnosis of cancer. The money will significantly relieve financial pressure for the Centre in the provision of healing therapies. These therapies counteract the unpleasant side effects of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, as well as maintaining physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Maureen also emphasised that the Sligo Cancer Support Centre is now recommended by the oncology units in Sligo and Galway hospitals as being an essential aspect of healing.
Mid-Life Slices continues to be on sale in local businesses and bookshops in Sligo, Leitrim and West Cavan, and will also be available at a number of Christmas craft fairs. (Details of outlets will be available on facebook at midlifeslicesbookproject).
At 12 euro, the book makes an ideal Christmas gift.
Maureen and Ita wish to acknowledge and thank all those involved in this special project: the wonderful women who contributed, those involved in fund raising, those involved in the launch particularly Marion Harkin and Ray and Eileen Monaghan,Carol Mc Namara of Molly’s Press and local businesses and bookshops who continue to support sales of Mid-Life Slices.
