Three members of the European Democratic Party (EDP), of which Marian Harkin is the sole Irish member, have been appointed Ministers by newly elected President Emmanuel Macron.
The EDP, with the Liberals, constitute the ALDE group.
Two of the three new French Ministers have good knowledge of Ireland and two of them attended an EDP event organised by Marian Harkin in Sligo.
The three are: Francois Bayrou, Minister for Justice; Marielle De Sarnez, Minister for European Affairs and Sylvie Goulard, Minister for Defense.
Recently Marian co-hosted with Sylvia Goulard, a seminar in the European Parliament ‘Be Fair Europe – Stand Up for Homeless People’.
The seminar dealt with homelessness and housing exclusion in the EU and featured speakers from Focus Ireland and members of Ireland’s High Hopes Choir.
“We have known each other for many years, worked well together and, with Ireland’s need to receive support in the post Brexit era ahead I will, where possible, use this relationship to obtain understanding for the particular difficulties which uniquely face Ireland in the years ahead”, Marian Harkin said.
