Kerry scientist drowns in Holland

A 28-year-old Kerry man has died in The Netherlands.

Local authorities have confirmed that he got into difficulty while swimming at Egmond aan Zee in the early hours of yesterday morning, Thursday.

The scientist, Alan Lucid from Ballyheigue, North Kerry was in the Netherlands this week to attend the International Symposium on Lactic Acid Bacteria, which finished on Thursday.

Itís reported that a number of members of the group went swimming but when they got out of the water the man was missing.

Emergency services were called at 3.15 am and they arrived soon after.

The man was removed from the water and attempts were made to resuscitate him but these were not successful.

Local police have confirmed they are treating the man's death as an accident.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed they are aware of the man's death.
