Sligo Rovers inch towards the safety zone

Shamrock Rovers 1 - 1 Sligo Rovers

SLIGO ROVERS took another step to securing their status in top flight football last night, Friday.

Regan Donelon's 76th minute equaliser from a free kick in Tallaght against Shamrock Rovers earned a vital point.

Vital Free

Jamie McDonagh won the vital free kick after a foul by Trevor Clarke, who was also booked.

For much of last night, the LiveScore league table showed Sligo Rovers in the relegation zone.

This happened after Shamrock Rovers, chasing a European spot next season, dominated the early exchanges and took a 33rd minute lead through Gary Shaw.

Fifteen minutes earlier the same player watched as his header rocketed back off the Sligo Rovers woodwork.

Shortly after Donelon's 76th minute equaliser Vinny Faherty almost took all three points with a header cleared off the line.

Greg Moorhouse also struck wood in the first of five added minutes.

But even after eight months and with just two games remaining the Bit o' Red are not fully safe yet in the premier grade of the SSE Airtricity League.

They have the worst goal difference between three teams, St Patrick's Athletic, Sligo Rovers and Galway United locked on 35, 35 and 34 points respectively.

Relegation Trapdoor

Any one of those three teams, or Limerick even (36 points and a game in hand), could yet fall through the final relegation trapdoor on the holiday weekend later this month.

Drogheda United were already doomed and last night's 3-0 defeat of Finn Harps by north west neighbours Derry City all but sealed Donegal's doom.

The competitive nature of last night's game was underlined by seven yellow cards dished out by referee Jim McKell of Tipperary.

Sligo four cards were collected by: Regan Donelon, Craig Roddan, Daniel Kearns and Kyle Callan-McFadden.

After the game players and manager applauded the large contingent of Sligo Rovers fans who had travelled to the west Dublin venue last night.
