A National 'Status Red' Wind alert is in place with the storm expected to visit County Sligo early this afternoon.

Met Eireann is forecasting violent  and destructive gusts with all areas at risk, with heavy rain and storm surges. They have warned that there is potential risk to lives.

Sligo County Council is urging people to exercise  extreme caution. 

Wind speeds in excess of 80km  per hour are predicted with gusts in excess of 130km per hour. People are asked to avoid any unnecessary journeys .

Sligo County Councilís public offices will be closed from 12.30pm today

Motorists and other road users are asked to be vigilant due to the danger of falling trees and overhead wires. 

Heavy rain may also result in local  flooding. 

Met Eireann has warned that the storm may  be of sufficient force to cause  structural damage,      pedestrians should beware of falling roof slates and other debris.
