Planning applications should be broadband ready – Henry

Ballymote-Tubbercurry Fianna Fáil Councillor Keith Henry has asked for Sligo County Council to examine the mandatory inclusion of broadband ducting as a condition for new planning applications within the county.

Cllr Henry proposed his motion at the February meeting of the Council where he said “at almost every Council meeting we are talking about broadband provision for Sligo and while the news regarding Eir’s withdrawal from the National Broadband Plan tendering process is worrying we still have to be proactive.”

“New premises in the County should be ready to receive fast fibre broadband whenever it is eventually fully rolled out. By including fibre ducting as a planning requirement it will be more cost efficient in the long run and allow new houses and businesses to tap into the network quicker and easier” Henry added.

Cllr Henry who is the Vice Chairperson of the Council said his party “have a bill in the Dáil on the matter but there’s no reason why we in Sligo can’t be ahead of the curve”. The Council’s planning unit will examine this and how it can be included in planning requirements on foot of Cllr Henry’s motion.
