The scenic beach at Lissadell in north Sligo was the scene of a natural phenomenon when over 30,000 starfish were washed up onto the isolated beach.
An investigation by the Department of the Environment is currently underway to establish the cause of the unusual and rare incident. Experts already believe that a severe storm in the Atlantic, as witnessed by the high winds experienced in Sligo yesterday, played a significant part.
The storm is believed to have created a tsunami-like monster wave which scoured the seabed close to the Sligo coast and deposited the unfortunate fish onto the beach.
The outgoing tides should help clear the beach of the carcasses.
