Latest Sligo Sports News-Updated As It Happens

The Irish Junior Surfing Championships Tour for 2010 kicked off at the weekend with the CSkins West Coast Junior Championships hosted in Lahinch, Co Clare. The tour, to crown national junior champions, comprises of four events. Along with the event in Lahinch it will also take in events in Tramore, Bundoran and Rossnowlagh. The weekend’s event was also a selection event for the Irish Junior Surf Team to compete at the European Junior Championships in Portugal in May.

Although the event was scheduled to run over two days the forecast for surf on Sunday was poor so contest organisers made the wise decision to run the entire event on Saturday. Heats got underway in small but contestable surf culminating in some exciting finals on Saturday evening.

The U14 Boys culminated in a tight final between Sligo surfers Gearoid Mc Daid and Aaron O’Hare with Gearoid just edging into first place. Local groms, Harry Broderick and Lorcan Casey showed great promise for the future in their first national contest.

Iarom Travers used his experience and flair to dominate the U16 Boys with Lahinch’s Donough Cronin 2nd, Neil Murphy, Bundoran 3rd and Cian Cagney, Lahinch 4th.

In the U18 Girls Bodyboard, newcomer Rachel Cahalan from Cork, impressed judges to take 1st and as expected Odhran McGovern, Sligo took the U16 Boys title. The U18 Boys bodyboard final proved controversial with the heat leader, Rory O’Dowd dropping to 3rd place following two interferences and Aaron Devanney, Sligo taking the win.

There was a good turn out for the U18 Girls event with several new faces from Cork, Clare and Waterford but it was the girls from the North West that progressed to the final. Niamh Kelly, Strandhill took 1st with Ayesha Garvey, Castlederg 2nd, Eva Martin, Sligo 3rd and Emily Stewart, Bundoran 4th.

With a combination on traditional and modern manoeuvres, Craig Butler, Tramore was a convincing winner in the U18 Longboard. Eoin O’Malley Daly came in 2nd and competing at their first national, Cork’s Shane Creedon and Mike Coughlan put in good performances to finish 3rd and 4th respectively.

Aaron Reid won the U18 Boys, James Garvey took 2nd, Cillian Ryan 3rd and Conor Maguire 4th.

Congratulation to the West Coast Surf Club for hosting this very successful event and the first “green” surfing event to be held under the Irish Surfing Association new Green Events Policy. Thanks to CSkins for their continued support of Irish surfing.
