A young woman, in her late 20’s, was rushed to Sligo General Hospital following an frenzied and viscous attack in which she was stabbed up to eleven times in the stomach by a man who was also wounded. The incident occurred in Sligo's Market Yard at about 4.30pm yesterday [Thurs] afternoon.
The man, who was believed to be known to the woman, was admitted to hospital with serious head injuries and a stomach wound, having been arrested a short time later on Mail Coach Road.
He was arrested under the Criminal Justice Act and can be detained for up to 24hrs.
Gardai are understood not to be looking for any other person in connection with the incident and have been carrying out a technical examination of the area.
The latest information has described the woman’s medical condition as stable and not life-threatening.
An update on the man's condition is pending.
Update: Both the man and the woman are believed to be in a 'stable condition' and are still being treated in Sligo General Hospital.
