The Model, home of The Niland Collection, have been awarded a grant from The Heritage Council for the conservation of a suite of Norah McGuinness drawings from The Niland Collection. The drawings, which are original illustrations McGuinness did for WB Yeats’ Stories of Red Hanrahan, had been stored in damp conditions for a long time prior to the collection’s move to The Model in 2001.
As a result the works had sustained varying degrees of discolouration, mould growth and blistering and had not been exhibited in many years. Now thanks to the Heritage Council, one of Ireland’s best paper conservators Pat McBride, is repairing the drawings. Pat has worked for The Model in the past and his conservation work is amazing. The drawings will go on display in The Model towards the end of the year following the completion of this work.
The Niland Collection, (which is the Sligo Municipal Art Collection), is housed and cared for by The Model. The collection is named after one of Sligo's most dedicated and hard working citizens; Nora Niland. In the 1950s, Nora was instrumental in establishing the Sligo Municipal Art Collection, which today bears her name.
