Former Anglo Irish Bank CEO arrested

Sean FitzPatrick, the former chief executive of Anglo Irish Bank, has been arrested in Dublin this morning as part of an investigation into alleged financial irregularities.

He was detained at Arrivals in Dublin Airport early this morning by gardaí attached to the Office of the Director Corporate Enforcement.

Fitzpatrick, who is aged in his 60s, is expected to appear at the Courts of Criminal Justice in Dublin later this morning.

Gardaí said the arrest was part of an ongoing investigation by gardaí from the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation and the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement into alleged financial irregularities at Anglo.

FitzPatrick’s arrest follows the appearance in court yesterday of two other former high-ranking executives at the bank.

Former Anglo executives Willie McAteer and Pat Whelan were each charged with company law offences relating to providing unlawful financial assistance to 16 individuals in July 2008 as the banking crisis was worsening.

They are the first individuals to face criminal charges in the 3½-year investigation into the collapse of the bank.
